The LILYGO T-TWR Plus is the ultimate development board for ambitious tech enthusiasts. With integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a SA868 Wireless Transceiver, this board allows you to create your own custom handheld radio.
T-TWR Plus is an ESP32 development board developed by LILYGO with the main functions of a walkie-talkie. In addition to the basic version, an OpenEdition version is being jointly worked on with the M17 & OpenRTX communities, meaning that popular digital voice modes will be possible. The OpenRTX group have announced they are working on Bluetooth LE KISS TNC capabilities for this device which will enable APRS and packet radio features. This could pair very nicely with the Cardputer from M5Stack (another ESP32 based device) to make a tiny packet radio station for your pocket! The ham community is also sure to start coming up with unique and interesting use cases and firmware for the Lilygo T-TWR Plus once these devices become more common.
The development board has several key features:
- Walkie-Talkie Functionality
- Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- GPS for Location Tracking
- SH1106 1.3″ OLED Display (128×64 pixels)
- SA868 Wireless Transceiver
- TF Card slot for storage
- WS2812 RGB LED
- Integrated battery holder (18650 or 21700 LiPo)
It’s important to note the differences in the four available versions. The standard versions are available as either VHF (134-174MHz) or UHF (400-480MHz) and come ready to use out of the box. The OpenEdition versions are also available in either VHF or UHF flavour, but they come without any firmware pre-installed, so you will need to either write your own, or use one of the community developed firmware images. Being based on the popular ESP32 chip, this should be quite an easy device to work with, and support should be easy to find.
